The fifth temple in the Ashtavinayak pilgrimage circuit, the Chintamani Temple at Theur is situated at the sacred confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers in Haveli taluka of Pune district. The name Chintamani translates to 'the jewel that removes worries'. This beloved deity is widely revered for removing all anxieties and granting peace of mind to devotees who seek his blessings.
History and Mythology
The mythological story behind the Theur Chintamani Temple is fascinating. Sage Kapila possessed a divine gem called Chintamani that had the power to fulfill all desires. A king named Guna coveted and stole this precious gem. The distressed sage prayed to Lord Ganesha for help. Ganesha defeated King Guna and restored the Chintamani gem to Sage Kapila. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Sage Kapila offered the gem back to Ganesha himself. From that point onward, Ganesha became known as Chintamani — the one who possesses the worry-removing gem.
Another legend relates that Lord Brahma, while creating the universe, was overwhelmed by numerous worries and concerns. He worshipped Ganesha at this very location, and Ganesha relieved him of all his anxieties, enabling him to complete the act of creation.
Peshwa-Era Grandeur
The Theur Chintamani Temple shares a deep and abiding connection with the Peshwa dynasty. Madhavrao Peshwa held this temple in the highest reverence and was an ardent devotee. He commissioned a magnificent renovation of the temple and beautified the entire temple complex. Madhavrao Peshwa visited this temple regularly for darshan and prayer. His samadhi (memorial) is located within the temple premises, testament to his lifelong devotion. During the Peshwa period, the temple received generous royal patronage, significantly enhancing its grandeur and facilities.
The Legacy of Morya Gosavi
Theur is hallowed ground in the Ganesha devotion tradition as the meditation site of the great saint Morya Gosavi. In the fourteenth century, Morya Gosavi performed intense penance at the Morgaon Moreshwar temple and was blessed with a direct vision of Lord Ganesha. He subsequently settled at Theur and spent his entire life in devoted worship of Ganesha. The iconic chant 'Ganpati Bappa Morya' — heard throughout Maharashtra and indeed all of India during Ganesh festivals — derives its name from Morya Gosavi himself. The Morya Gosavi Math (monastery) and his samadhi are located within the Theur temple complex and are essential stops for devotees.
Temple Architecture
The Chintamani Temple is an excellent example of grand and beautiful architecture. The sabhamandap (assembly hall) is spacious, supported by wooden pillars adorned with exquisite carved work depicting mythological scenes. The idol in the sanctum has a left-turned trunk and faces east. A large courtyard encircles the temple. An imposing black stone Deepmal (lamp pillar) stands before the temple entrance. The temple complex includes beautiful gardens, a sacred water tank, and meditation chambers that invite contemplation and prayer.
