Located in the village of Pali on the banks of the Amba River in Sudhagad taluka of Raigad district, this is the only Ganesha temple in the world where the deity is known by a devotee's name — Ballaleshwar — making it a powerful testament to the rewards of unwavering devotion.
The Legend of Ballal
According to ancient mythology, a wealthy merchant named Kalyansheth lived in the village of Pali. His son Ballal developed an intense devotion to Lord Ganesha from a very young age. Ballal would gather the village children and go into the forest to worship Ganesha with great fervor. When some villagers noticed that their children were neglecting their studies, they complained to Kalyansheth.
Enraged, Kalyansheth tied Ballal to a tree in the forest and smashed the Ganesha idol that the boy had been worshipping. Despite enduring tremendous suffering, young Ballal refused to abandon his devotion. He prayed to Ganesha with all his heart and soul. Lord Ganesha, moved by such extraordinary devotion, manifested himself in person and freed Ballal from his bonds. So pleased was Ganesha with Ballal's unshakeable faith that he declared he would forever be known at this sacred place by Ballal's name — Ballaleshwar. From that day onward, the Ganesha at this site has been worshipped as Ballaleshwar.
Temple Architecture
The Ballaleshwar Temple is a beautiful and grand structure. The sanctum sanctorum faces east. The temple features stone construction with a spacious courtyard surrounding it. The idol in the inner sanctum is considered Swayambhu (self-manifested) and has a left-turned trunk. The deity is adorned with sindoor (vermilion) and has diamond eyes that sparkle in the lamp light. A magnificent stone lamp pillar (Deepmal) stands in front of the temple. The temple complex includes a beautiful garden and a sacred water tank. The roof rests on wooden pillars with exquisitely detailed carvings that showcase traditional Marathi temple artistry.

Special abhishek pujas are performed every Monday and Tuesday, drawing regular devotees throughout the year.
Darshan Timings
The temple opens at 5:00 AM and closes at 10:00 PM. The daily schedule includes: Kakad Aarti at 5:30 AM, Mahanaivedhya at 12:00 noon, Sayam Aarti at 8:00 PM, and Shej Aarti at 9:30 PM. Advance registration is required for special pujas, abhishek ceremonies, and homa-havan rituals.
How to Reach
Pali is approximately 110 kilometers from Pune and about 115 kilometers from Mumbai. The nearest railway station is Khopoli (30 km). Panvel Railway Station (45 km) also provides good connectivity. Pali is easily accessible from the Mumbai-Goa highway. MSRTC state transport buses, private vehicles, and taxis are available from both Mumbai and Pune. The road journey from Mumbai takes approximately two and a half hours.
