Among the eight sacred Ashtavinayak temples of Maharashtra, the Vighnahar Ganapati at Ozar holds a place of immense reverence and devotion. Situated on the banks of the Kukadi River in Junnar taluka of Pune district, this temple is believed to remove all obstacles from the lives of devotees. The name 'Vighnahar' literally translates to 'the remover of obstacles.' This is considered the fifth temple in the Ashtavinayak pilgrimage circuit.

History and Mythology

The legend of Ozar Ganapati is fascinating and deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. According to the Puranas, a demon named Vignhasura terrorized the gods and sages, creating obstacles in their sacred rituals and daily lives. Indra and other deities prayed to Lord Ganesha for help. Ganesha descended to earth, defeated Vignhasura in battle, and granted him a boon — if he promised never to trouble anyone again, his name would forever be linked with Ganesha's. From that day, Ganesha became known as 'Vighnahar' (remover of obstacles), and the reformed demon became 'Vighneshwar.'

The temple's recorded history is closely intertwined with the Peshwa era of the Maratha Empire. The present magnificent structure was built during the Peshwa period. Chimaji Appa, brother of Bajirao I, made a vow at this temple before his famous Vasai campaign against the Portuguese in 1739. After achieving a decisive victory, he renovated the temple extensively. The iconic golden pinnacle (soneri kalas) atop the temple was donated by Chimaji Appa as a mark of gratitude — it remains the temple's most striking feature to this day.

Temple Architecture

The architecture of Ozar temple is an excellent example of Peshwa-era craftsmanship. The golden pinnacle is visible from a great distance, beckoning devotees from miles away. The temple complex is spacious and well-maintained. As you enter through the grand gateway, you pass through the sabha mandap (assembly hall) before reaching the sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha). The idol of Ganapati faces east and is adorned with diamonds in its eyes and navel. The trunk of the idol curves to the left. The outer walls feature intricate carvings depicting various scenes from mythology.

Two tall deepamalas (lamp towers) stand in the courtyard, creating a magical spectacle when lit during evening prayers. A large hall in front of the temple serves as a gathering place where devotees sit for bhajans and kirtans.

Darshan Timings and Puja Schedule

The temple opens at 5:00 AM and closes at 10:00 PM daily. Regular rituals include the morning Mahapuja, afternoon Mahanaivedya (food offering), and evening Aarti. Special pujas and abhishek ceremonies are performed on Sankashti Chaturthi, Vinayaki Chaturthi, and Ganesh Chaturthi. During the Ganesh festival in the month of Bhadrapad (August-September), a grand ten-day celebration takes place with elaborate decorations and cultural programs.

Festivals and Celebrations

Maghi Ganesh Jayanti is the grandest festival at Ozar temple, attracting thousands of devotees from across Maharashtra. The Bhadrapad Ganeshotsav features ten days of celebrations with special rituals, music, and community feasts. Every month, Sankashti Chaturthi draws large crowds who fast the entire day and break their fast only after sighting the moon. Angarki Chaturthi, when Sankashti falls on a Tuesday, holds even greater significance.

Ozar is approximately 85 kilometers from Pune city. You can reach Ozar via the Pune-Nashik Highway (NH-60) through Narayangaon. Regular bus services operate from Pune to Junnar via Narayangaon. Junnar is the nearest taluka headquarters. Pune Airport is the closest airport. Driving your own vehicle is the most convenient option, especially if you plan to cover multiple Ashtavinayak temples in a single trip. From Mumbai, the distance is about 180 kilometers via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and then NH-60.

Ozar is surrounded by several remarkable tourist destinations. Lenyadri (Girijatmaj Ganapati), another Ashtavinayak temple carved into a Buddhist cave, is just 5 kilometers away. Shivneri Fort — the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj — is near Junnar and is a must-visit for history enthusiasts. Manmodi Caves, Jivdhan Fort, and Naneghat are excellent trekking destinations in the region. The Malavli Dam on the Kukadi River offers scenic beauty for nature lovers.
