Mythology and Legend

The story of Renuka Devi is deeply moving and spiritually profound. According to Puranic legend, Renuka was the devoted wife of Sage Jamadagni. They had five sons, the youngest being Parashurama — the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu. One day, Sage Jamadagni, in a fit of rage, ordered his sons to behead their mother. The first four sons refused, but Parashurama, bound by his unwavering obedience to his father, carried out the terrible command. Pleased with his devotion, Jamadagni offered Parashurama any boon. Without hesitation, Parashurama asked for his mother to be restored to life. Renuka was resurrected, and her story became an eternal testament to both maternal sacrifice and filial duty.

Another significant legend connects this site to Lord Dattatreya — the combined incarnation of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. One tradition holds that Dattatreya was born to Renuka and Sage Atri at this very location. The Dattatreya temple atop Mahurgad is linked to this legend. The story tells how Anusuya and Sage Atri's devoted penance pleased the Trinity, who then incarnated as Dattatreya.

The Hilltop Temple
