Meaning
The Vishnu Sahasranamam is from the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata. It was recited by Bhishma Pitamaha to Yudhishthira while lying on the bed of arrows. It contains 1000 divine names of Lord Vishnu, each describing a quality, power, or divine play. The dhyanam section meditates upon Vishnu reclining on Shesha Naga, lotus-naveled, beloved of Lakshmi. The Phala Shruti describes the immense benefits of recitation — attainment of dharma, wealth, desires, liberation, freedom from disease, fear, and bondage. The Uttara Peethika includes profound statements from Arjuna, Krishna, Vyasa, Parvati, Shiva, Brahma, and Sanjaya.
