Meaning
Purusha Sukta is an ancient and important hymn from the Rigveda (10.90). It describes the Cosmic Person (Purusha/Supreme Being). This Purusha has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, and a thousand feet. He pervades the earth and extends ten fingers beyond. Whatever has been and will be is this Purusha alone. All beings exist in one quarter of Him, while three quarters are immortal in heaven. From the sacrifice of this Purusha arose the Vedas, animals, seasons, the moon, sun, Indra, Agni, Vayu, and the entire creation.
Benefits
Recitation of Purusha Sukta is considered extremely sacred. It is used in yajnas, homas, and pujas. One who knows this Sukta attains immortality - 'Tam evam vidvan amrita iha bhavati nanyah pantha ayanaya vidyate' (There is no other path to liberation). It holds importance in all Vedic rituals. It is recited for Self-knowledge and attainment of Moksha.
