Meaning
Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmyam) is the most important section of the Markandeya Purana. In 700 shlokas across 13 chapters, it describes three divine episodes: First Charitra — Maha Maya, Vishnu's Yoganidra, and the slaying of Madhu-Kaitabha; Middle Charitra — the destruction of Mahishasura; Final Charitra — the slaying of Shumbha-Nishumbha. The preliminary texts include Kavach (protection by nine Durgas), Argala Stotra (seeking beauty, victory, and glory), and Keelakam (unlocking the stotra's power). Chapter 4's 'Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu' verses are the most famous, describing the Goddess as present in all beings in various forms. Chapter 11's Narayani Stuti ('Sarva Mangala Mangalye Shive...') is the most popular verse in Devi worship.
